JUNGLE
I'll admit, I was initially confused as to how quickly I got hooked to jungle music. I remember visiting Ndoty in the north of France with some homies and truly discovering it over the weekend. When I got back to Paris, it's all I listened to on the train. I made 1997 Oxygen that same morning right before taking the trip and never looked back. Over time, I eventually realized that jungle music had been around me my whole life, I just hadn't noticed it yet. It was actually one of the first types of music I ever listened to. Growing up playing Bombeman 64, I had never even realized the OST was full of it.
When I made "Rude" off "Excursions, Vol 1", I was actually trying to make my drums sound like "Mutual Slump" off DJ Shadow's Endtroducing. But yet again, I had failed to notice the song was closer to Jungle than I could have ever imagined!
Jungle music is everywhere if you pay close enough attention to it. Breaks have been used in all genres of music for the past 30 years and i'm glad the genre is finally starting to see some new light shed onto it. I feel like the 2020's will see a new genesis for electronic music, bringing back older styles and adapting them to the times.
Here are some of my favorite mixes and tracks from the genre. Happy digging y'all.
Easily my favorite jungle mix. Everything just sounds so beautiful and the tape compressions adds so many beautiful artifacts.
